How To Make Tailored Bras: Taught by Designer of GIANNA

Rise and shine, beautiful people! Today, I'm here to share with you all a priceless experience of making customized lingerie. A skill that I so passionately sought to learn, creating a fitted bra was incredibly rewarding and exciting. Throughout process, it dawned on me that we sometimes take for granted the things that, in fact, take immense dedication and effort to finish. We often overlook the hard work that has been done behind the screens of products we wear, like our undergarments.

The class took place at Huron Palm Doe-san Dae-ro, which is situated in between the Apgujeong and Shin-sa-dong district. What the whole process entailed were three stages in succession: measurement, patterning making, and textile.

As shown in the picture above, the atmosphere of the class was warm and cozy, allowing us to focus and reflect on our project.

The designer of Gianna is currently managing the designer lingerie brand “GIANNA” and has guest starred at Follow Me 6, a Korean TV show sharing tips and hot issues in beauty and fashion. Unlike prevalently mass-produced undergarment products, exemplified by bras sold in chain shops like Wonder Bra, the burgeoning trend of purchasing personalized and tailored bras is what designers like the mogul from Gianna are chasing after. We hope this blog post finds you well, and if you are interested, we’ve provided you with a link of Gianna below. Definitely worth checking out!

PROCESS:
First things first! Materials. Surprisingly, there were a wide array of different types of rulers to measure our breast sizes. The most important gauging tool was the protractor that measured the angle of our physicality. One thing that I’d like to point out is the hurricane ruler shown above. It is deemed to be utilized as a tool to help draw circles. How unique! Of course, all materials have been provided by the designer of Gianna.

Through the process, I realized that the crux of making bras derives from the unique ways in which each designer combines his/her scientific ways of measurements and his/her artistic touch - an idiosyncratic marriage of science and art.

For this reason, regardless of the fixed designated size (for example, 33A) that we all have, its difficult for each brand and each designers to produce the identically similar size of an undergarment.

To begin with, we measured our physical breast size. The process shed light on the intricateness that the designer of Gianna has in creating her products, as she emphasized the  importance of precisely measuring our body sizes. This seemed to be the secret in creating the most comfortable and most fit bra.

With a bust size of 71 cm, I always find it tricky to settle on the standard bra size. A bra of 70cm is a little too tight, and that of 75cm is a bit too loose.

The rest of the class were diligently working and learning. Interestingly, the group was comprised of students who were professionally in fashion industries to individuals who wanted to learn garment-making as a hobby. If you ever want to explore this arena, I highly recommend you to try it out.

Given the measurements, we utilized the oilpaper to create a wing pattern.

With help of the protractor, the shape was beginning to come alive. Excited at the prospect of learning again, I became intrigued.

Once the rough sketch is completed, as shown above, we continued to adjust and cut out the patterned fabrics by aligning it with the pre-cut lace model. We were informed that the designer of Gianna only uses foreign fabric laces. Quality much?

As you can see, we were soaked that our products were inching closer to the end. Easier said than done, the cutting of the garments were, admittedly, assisted by the designer of Gianna. Kudos to her! :)

Now that all the fabric is cut, all that needs to be done is sewing the garment onto the white mold.

Sooner or later, a blog will be posted, demonstrating the bra to an actually model. Be excited!

Last but not least, I was able to take a picture with the designer of Gianna. A beautiful person on the inside and outside, the designer of Gianna was someone who continues to inspire those with passion in fashion.

The act of creating a bra from ground up taught me an invaluable lesson of what it entails to make tailored lingerie that is for only one person and that person only. With something so personal like our bra and underwear, the experience allowed me to understand why we must not overlook the quality of our products.
